Police officers responded to the 100 block of South Cayuga Street, just off the Commons in Downtown Ithaca, at about 3:35 Tuesday morning to find the aftermath of the latest in a series of commercial burglaries, according to a statement from the Ithaca Police Department.

Tuesday’s statement from IPD Sergeant Michael Meskill says the window of a business on the block had been smashed and property taken, and “there were proceeds of the burglary in the middle of the road.”

“There were several people involved in the commission of the crime and two vehicles,” according to Meskill’s statement. “The vehicles involved appeared to be a gray Kia Soul and a white Hyundai Sonata. The descriptions of the vehicles were relayed to the Tompkins County Sheriff’s and New York State Police who assisted in the investigation.”

In a separate statement, Sgt. Meskill shared details from a series of burglaries that had occurred last weekend, with an estimate of “four to five people involved in the crimes” that took place in the early morning hours of July 8th.

That morning, a business in the 200 block of Elmira Road had the front door forced in and the property ransacked; a business in the 500 block of West State Street had a window “broken by an object” and multiple items stolen, including beer and cigarettes; and a business on the Commons had a window smashed and “various items” stolen.

Meskill says the New York State Police and Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office have been assisting with the burglary investigations.

IPD asks anyone who may have additional information about the incidents or have video to call police dispatch at 607-272-3245, the administration line at 607-272-9973, the police tipline at 607-330-0000, or send e-mail to [email protected] or use the anonymous online tip form.
